Giants land Okoye as Harbaugh backs Beckham’s return

Okoye Arrives With a Plan

The New York Giants made a move that fixes a hole on the defensive line. They acquired defensive tackle CJ Okoye from the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. This deal sends a 2028 seventh-round pick to Baltimore, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. The Giants needed size in the middle and got a 6-foot-6, 365-pound player who knows the system. Okoye played under head coach John Harbaugh last season when he was in Baltimore. He recorded 15 tackles in 13 games last year. That is not a huge number, but it shows he was on the field. Now he joins a list of former Ravens in New York that includes Isaiah Likely and Jordan Stout. The Giants just got an extra pick earlier this week after sending Joshua Ezeudu to Kansas City. Baltimore received their own draft choice thanks to that additional selection. It is a smart swap for a team that lacked depth up front.

Beckham Earns His Keep

While the defense gets a boost, the offense has a story that matters just as much. Odell Beckham Jr. has done the work to stay in the league. Coach John Harbaugh said it plain and simple after the preseason finale against the Jets. “Yes, he has done enough to make an NFL roster, for sure,” Harbaugh said, according to ESPN NFL Dallas. He added that Beckham “has played well” and “gotten better as camp’s gone along.” The 33-year-old receiver signed with the Giants in the spring and had to prove he was healthy. He didn’t miss a practice this summer. He showed he can still get open and separate from defenders. In the final game, he had three catches for 53 yards. Jameis Winston, the backup quarterback, could have thrown slightly better to nearly secure a 73-yard touchdown for him. Beckham hit 20.54 mph on that play, the second-fastest speed in the game. He says he can hit 21 mph soon. This is the kind of effort fans respect. It is not about talent alone. It is about showing up and doing the job.

Why the Work Matters More

I tell you this because too many people look at the hype and miss the grind. Beckham was out of the league last season. He had just nine catches with Miami in 2024. Many would have written him off as a has-been. But he put in the reps. He listened to Harbaugh, who made it clear that Beckham needed to earn his spot. “He’s done a really good job with it,” Harbaugh noted. That is the kind of thing that separates a good week from a bad one. It is the film session and the extra work nobody sees. Okoye is the same. He was on the bubble for the Ravens. He worked his way into a trade because he was ready. The Giants are building a team of players who understand the job. They know that talent means nothing without the effort to back it up. The deadline for teams to make final cuts is 6 p.m. ET Sunday. Beckham knows what is at stake. “It would mean everything to me if I made it,” Beckham said. He wants to show his son that hard work pays off. That is a lesson for all of us.
