For Texas parents watching their daughters compete, fairness in sports is not an abstract political debate. It is about playing time, scholarships, competition and the opportunity to succeed.
That makes James Talarico’s record on transgender athletes an important issue for sports fans.
As a Texas state representative, Talarico opposed Republican legislation restricting transgender student-athletes from competing on teams matching their gender identity. He argued that the proposals were overly broad and criticized lawmakers for making eligibility decisions in Austin.
His comments went further in 2021.
“Some things are more important than perfectly fair competition in sports,” Talarico said during the debate, according to reporting by The Texas Tribune.
Five years later, his message changed.
In September 2026, Talarico said he would oppose transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports if doing so endangered safety or fairness. He explained that he had opposed the earlier bills because he considered them overly broad and said he supported amendments giving local communities more authority.
That explanation deserves scrutiny.
A record that needs explaining
Talarico’s latest position sounds different from the arguments he made while opposing the Texas legislation.
He now says safety and fairness matter. But his earlier comments questioned the emphasis lawmakers placed on competitive fairness.
The distinction he draws is that he opposed the specific bills, not every possible restriction.
That may explain his votes, but it leaves an important question: What specific rules would he support today?
Girls’ sports deserve clear standards
Athletes, coaches and families need predictable eligibility rules.
They should not have to guess where a candidate stands based on which interview or campaign statement they hear.
Talarico has now said he supports restrictions when safety or fairness is at risk. Voters deserve details about how he would define those standards and who should enforce them.
The question Texas fans should ask
Talarico has every right to explain why he opposed the earlier bills. But Texas families also have every right to compare his current statements with his legislative record.
When it comes to girls’ sports, fairness should not be an afterthought.
And candidates seeking to represent Texas should be prepared to explain exactly what they mean by it.
