DK Metcalf’s Circus Catch Proves He Belongs in Pittsburgh

The Catch That Stopped the Crowd

Eight thousand four hundred and ninety-nine fans packed Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Saturday. They came to see something special, and they got it. The air was thick with heat and noise when Aaron Rodgers looked down the right sideline. DK Metcalf ran deep while Asante Samuel Jr. matched him stride for stride. Rodgers threw a perfect ball that Metcalf had to fight for. The receiver juggled it with the defender before both hit the turf. Metcalf came down with the ball using just one hand while falling. Behind the Steel Curtain reported this play was arguably the best catch seen all camp. The crowd roared loud enough to shake the bleachers. That is the kind of play that changes a season.

It’s not about the hype. It’s about the work.

This was the ninth practice of the 2026 training camp. It showed exactly why the Steelers traded for Metcalf in 2025. He has the size and speed to win battles in the air. Rodgers and Metcalf seem to be finding their rhythm early. That connection will make the offense much harder to stop. Can you stop a team that moves like that? Not easily.

Samuel Stepping Into the Spotlight

While Metcalf made the highlight, Asante Samuel Jr. is doing the hard work nobody sees. Joey Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey are both on the physically unable to perform list. That leaves a huge hole in the secondary that someone must fill. Samuel has stepped up to lead the defense with force. During team periods, he has executed terrific plays on the ball. He even broke up a pass while covering Metcalf on a deep route. Coach Mike McCarthy spoke highly of his effort during the offseason program. McCarthy said, “[He’s made a] huge first impression with me.” He praised Samuel’s energy and ball skills. The coach also noted that Samuel is a position flexible player, clearly. This versatility matters when star corners are out.

Does he have the talent? Sure. But does he have the reps? That’s what counts.

Samuel was signed last season after he had spinal fusion surgery in April. He did not waste time showing he was still a top talent. He intercepted Tua Tagovailoa in Week 15 to help beat Miami. Now he is proving he can start in the biggest role. The defense needs him to stay sharp.

Broderick Jones and The Real Test

It was a shock to see Broderick Jones cleared for camp after his injury. He looks like he is making serious strides after a few weeks. In one-on-one blocking drills, Jones knocked edge rusher Nick Herbig on his backside. That rep showed power and quickness that fans need to see. Jones is listed as the backup left tackle on the initial depth chart. He must keep this up to earn a real role on the team. The offensive line cannot have holes if they want to win.

What happens when the season starts? That’s the question.

The young quarterback Drew Allar also showed flashes of his potential. He hit tight end Robert Tonyan for a fifty-yard touchdown on a sideline throw. Allar also hit wide receiver Brandon Smith on a diving catch at the goal line. These moments prove the project is moving forward. The team has depth at every spot. That is a good sign for the long run. Next practice is Monday. Let’s see if the momentum holds.
