Wake Forest has emerged as one of the biggest surprises in college football this season, and the Demon Deacons are putting themselves in position to compete for an ACC championship. With the regular season entering its final stretch, Wake Forest has a legitimate opportunity to make a run at the conference title.
The Demon Deacons enter the latest stretch with a 7-1 overall record and a 5-1 mark in ACC play. Their only conference loss came against Miami, which currently sits atop the standings at 6-0. Wake Forest is just one game behind the Hurricanes, keeping its championship hopes alive.
Wake Forest Has Become a Serious Contender
Head coach Jake Dickert deserves plenty of credit for what his team has accomplished. Wake Forest has won five consecutive games since its loss to Miami, including convincing victories over Stanford, NC State, California and Virginia.
The defense has been especially impressive during that stretch. Wake Forest has consistently limited opposing offenses while giving its offense opportunities to take control of games.
The Demon Deacons have also shown they can compete away from home, picking up important road victories against Louisville, NC State and California.
The Road Ahead Will Decide Everything
Wake Forest still has several important games remaining. A November matchup against SMU could have major implications for the ACC standings, followed by games against Georgia Tech and Duke.
Miami remains the biggest obstacle. The Hurricanes have yet to lose a conference game, meaning Wake Forest will likely need some help to catch them and reach the ACC Championship Game.
Can the Demon Deacons Finish the Job?
Wake Forest absolutely has a chance to win the ACC, but there is very little room for error. Winning the remaining games is essential, and the team will need Miami to stumble.
The Demon Deacons have already proven they belong in the conversation. If they keep playing at this level, Wake Forest could turn an impressive season into a championship run.
