The Indiana Hoosiers have already accomplished something few people believed was possible. After completing an undefeated 16-0 season and winning the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship, Indiana is now chasing an even bigger achievement: becoming back-to-back national champions.
Under head coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers have transformed from one of college football’s biggest underdogs into a legitimate national powerhouse. However, repeating as champions is an entirely different challenge, especially after losing several important players from last season’s historic roster.
Indiana Remains a Championship Contender
Indiana has shown that last season’s championship was no fluke. The Hoosiers are currently 8-1 and ranked No. 4 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings released this week.
The program has continued winning despite facing major changes during the offseason. Former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza departed for the NFL after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Replacing a quarterback of Mendoza’s caliber was never going to be easy. However, Indiana brought in Josh Hoover through the transfer portal, giving Cignetti an experienced option to lead the offense.
The Hoosiers have continued finding ways to win, including back-to-back overtime victories that demonstrated their ability to handle difficult situations.
Curt Cignetti Has Built Something Special
One of the biggest reasons Indiana has a chance to repeat is Cignetti.
Since arriving in Bloomington, he has completely changed the culture surrounding the program. His confidence, recruiting approach and ability to develop experienced players have helped Indiana compete with college football’s traditional powerhouses.
The transfer portal has also played a major role in the Hoosiers’ success. Instead of relying entirely on high school recruiting, Cignetti has consistently found experienced players who fit his system.
That approach could be especially important as Indiana attempts to replace the production lost from its championship roster.
The Road to Another Championship
There is no question that repeating will be difficult. Indiana will face several talented opponents, and the pressure of defending a national championship creates another challenge.
However, the Hoosiers are already in a strong position. Their No. 4 ranking puts them in position for a potential first-round bye if they remain among the top four teams in the final playoff rankings.
Indiana has already proven it can compete with anybody in the country. Now, the Hoosiers have an opportunity to prove that last season was only the beginning.
Back-to-back national championships are rare, but counting out Cignetti and Indiana would be a mistake. This program has already shocked the college football world once, and another championship run is absolutely within reach.
