The Kentucky Wildcats have completely changed the narrative surrounding their football program in 2026. After a disappointing 2025 season that ended with a 5-7 record, expectations were relatively modest entering the new year. However, first-year head coach Will Stein has turned Kentucky into one of the biggest surprises in college football.
At 7-1 overall and 5-1 in SEC play, the Wildcats have gone from a team searching for answers to a legitimate contender in one of the toughest conferences in the country.
Will Stein Has Changed Everything
The biggest reason behind Kentucky’s turnaround has been the arrival of Stein. After serving as Oregon’s offensive coordinator, he returned to his home state and immediately began building a new culture in Lexington.
Stein brought in a talented group of transfers, assembled his coaching staff and established an identity centered around toughness, confidence and accountability.
The results have been remarkable.
Kentucky opened the season with a victory over Youngstown State before suffering a 45-17 loss to Alabama. Instead of allowing that defeat to derail the season, the Wildcats responded with an incredible winning streak.
Their biggest statement came on the road against Texas A&M, where Kentucky defeated a top-10 opponent 31-21. The Wildcats followed that performance with dramatic overtime victories over South Carolina and LSU, winning both games by a single point.
The Wildcats Are Beating the Best
Kentucky’s success has not been limited to home games or weaker opponents. The Wildcats have proven they can compete anywhere, including a memorable 21-13 road victory over Oklahoma.
That win helped Kentucky move into a tie with Georgia at the top of the SEC standings. The Wildcats have also climbed to No. 8 in the AP Top 25, an incredible achievement for a program that struggled to reach bowl eligibility last season.
Quarterback Kenny Minchey has helped lead the offense, while the defense has delivered several important performances during the winning streak.
A Special Season in Lexington
There is still plenty of football remaining, and Kentucky faces a challenging schedule ahead. Matchups against Tennessee, Missouri, Florida and Louisville will test whether the Wildcats can maintain their momentum.
However, this season has already exceeded almost every expectation.
Kentucky has gone from a struggling program to an SEC contender in a matter of months. Stein deserves enormous credit for changing the culture, but the players deserve just as much recognition for believing in the vision. If the Wildcats keep winning, this turnaround could become one of the greatest stories in college football this season.
