The Tar Heels are staring down a massive test on Saturday afternoon in Dublin, Ireland. North Carolina kicks off its 2026 season against TCU at 12 p.m. If the defense doesn’t step up right now, the whole year could fall apart. Bill Belichick says the team had a much-improved offseason, but that hope meets a real test against a TCU offense that averaged 421.5 yards per game last year. That’s the kind of number that keeps coaches up at night.
Stop The New Quarterback First
TCU brings back their best runners, but they’re starting a brand-new quarterback. According to Yahoo Sports, Jaden Craig is stepping into his debut year as a Power Four Starter. He’s never faced this kind of pressure before. UNC has to make sure Craig faces relentless pressure the second the ball snaps. Edge rusher Melkart Abou-Jaoude is back after posting 12 TFLs and 10.5 sacks in 2026. He will be the focal point of the attack. Leroy Jackson and Isaiah Johnson provide stability in the trenches, while Jaylen Harvey, a transfer from Penn State, adds further experience to the line. If UNC consistently finds its way into the backfield, winning becomes much more likely. Craig simply cannot have time to think or breathe. It’s that simple.
Force Fourth Downs Or Lose
Last year, the defense had no issue generating stops on first and second downs. The problem came when opponents kept driving on third down. That constant rotation led to major fatigue. North Carolina will only have a chance to win if it forces fourth downs. They must guard the pass-catchers tightly or tip passes at the line. Sacking Craig is the best way to end drives. Stopping the run is just as critical. Jeremy Payne ended his sophomore campaign with five touchdowns. The Tar Heels limited him to 44 scrimmage yards in 2025, but he is still the threat. Greg Smith slots in as a starting safety after big moments last year. Kaleb Cost returns as a veteran in the secondary. Transfer linebackers Peyton Seelmann and Derek McDonald add depth. The pieces are there to win. You just have to see them work.
Experience Wins In The Modern Era
Experience wins games in college football plenty. With all the starpower UNC returns and adds, success is possible. The team is ready to avoid the embarrassment of the 2025 season-opener. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick remains on medical leave, but the unit improved under his guidance. This fall, Abou-Jaoude is back as one of the country’s premier pass-rushers. The defense looks half bad, which is a good sign. They just need to execute on Saturday. TCU’s offense ranked amongst college football’s best in 2025. Jordan Dwyer returns with 730 yards and 7 TDs. The Horned Frogs are dangerous. But UNC has every chance to jump all over their new-look offense. The keys are simple: get to the quarterback and get off the field on third down. Do those things, and the Tar Heels take the win. (ap)
