James Talarico’s Football and Sports Record Deserves More Scrutiny Before Texas Sends Him to Washington

Must read

TEXAS — Football is woven into the identity of Texas.

From Friday-night high school games to the Longhorns, Aggies and Red Raiders, the sport brings communities together and provides young athletes with opportunities to compete.

That makes political candidates’ views about sports worth examining.

James Talarico has raised concerns about fairness and transgender participation in school athletics, while previously opposing Republican legislation designed to restrict transgender athletes from competing on teams corresponding to their gender identity.

His 2021 comments went beyond a routine disagreement over legislative language. He argued that some things were more important than perfectly fair competition.

Talarico has since moderated his position, saying he opposes transgender participation in girls’ sports when safety or fairness is at risk.

That reversal deserves scrutiny.

There is also a legitimate debate about football safety, including concussions and long-term brain injuries. Those concerns should be addressed without treating the sport itself as something that needs to disappear.

There is no verified evidence that Talarico has proposed banning football. Voters should not confuse athlete-safety discussions with an actual prohibition.

But his record raises a broader question: Does he consistently defend the traditions and competitive integrity that Texas sports fans value?

Texas has some of the most passionate football supporters in America.

Those fans deserve clear answers about how their next senator would approach the future of sports.
