Tennessee Starts True Freshman Brandon, A Gamble on Youth

The Call That Changes Everything

Tennessee didn’t wait around. Before the season even kicked off, Head Coach Josh Heupel named true freshman Faizon Brandon the starting quarterback for Week 1. This decision lands just days before the Vols open their season against Furman on Sept. 5. It’s a rare choice for a program that usually waits for veterans. Since Brent Schaeffer in 2004, Brandon will be the first true freshman to start a season opener for Tennessee. Heupel confirmed the news in an afternoon press conference. This isn’t a minor lineup tweak. It’s a statement that the coaching staff trusts an 18-year-old to lead the offense immediately.

Brandon beat out sophomore George MacIntyre for the spot. MacIntyre threw nine passes last year while backing up Joey Aguilar. The decision wasn’t made lightly. It came after a hard-fought battle during training camp. Heupel said the staff made a confident choice. The coach pointed to Brandon’s performance in a scrimmage on Saturday as the clinching moment. According to Yahoo Sports CFB, the freshman showed he could handle the pressure. Ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in the nation, he is a five-star recruit.

You have to ask why pick a teenager over a guy who has been in the system for two years? The answer lies in the work Brandon put in during the summer. Heupel explained the reasoning clearly to the team. “We named him the starter because we believe in the work that he has put in and how he’s continued to grow and play throughout training camp and the second week through the second scrimmage,” the coach said. It wasn’t about a lack of talent from the other guys. Heupel noted that the starting role saw a great mix of guys competing for it.

Brandon brings a resume that demands attention. In high school at Grimsley in Greensboro, North Carolina, he threw for 6,374 yards and 79 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,261 yards and 21 more scores. His team won back-to-back state titles. He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds. The 247Sports Composite rated him as the No. 10 overall prospect in his class. The coach emphasized that this isn’t a permanent lock. The job is his, but he must keep proving it every single day.

A Big Risk in a Tough League

This is a massive gamble for a program that wants to win now. The SEC is a brutal conference. Tennessee faces Texas, Alabama, and LSU early in the schedule. These teams have veteran defenses that will try to expose any rookie mistakes. Some might argue that an 18-year-old is too young for this level of football. The last true freshman to have major success in the SEC was Jalen Hurts in 2016. Hurts had a dominant offensive system and future NFL stars around him. Brandon doesn’t have that same luxury yet. He has to step into the fire and learn on the job.

However, the Vols have a strong supporting cast. The offense returns eight starters. This includes receivers Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews, who both had 800-yard seasons. They also have DeSean Bishop, a 1,000-yard rusher. This gives Brandon a safety net if he struggles early. The coaching staff believes the group will grow together. Heupel said, “Strength of one position group can never be one guy. It’s true at quarterback.” The team is using this week as a mock game week to prepare. The timing of the announcement was simple. Heupel said, “Just when we came to a conclusion ultimately.”

The real test starts on Sept. 5 at Neyland Stadium. Tennessee will face Furman in the season opener. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. EDT and will air on SEC Network+. If Brandon struggles, the door is open for MacIntyre or others to step in. If he shines, he could become a legend in Knoxville. The road gets harder after the opener. The Vols travel to Georgia Tech on Sept. 12. Then they host Kennesaw State before the first SEC game. Texas visits on Sept. 26, which will be a true measuring stick for the new starter.

History shows that true freshmen can succeed, but it is rare. Peyton Manning, Josh Dobbs, and Nico Iamaleava all started for Tennessee in their first seasons. Brandon now joins that list. The pressure is on, but the talent is there. Fans will find out quickly if this gamble pays off. The season begins this Saturday for some teams, but the Vols are set for the 5th.
