Northwestern’s Defensive Line Lost Its Best Edge Rusher Before Season Starts

Must read

The Big Hole in Evanston

You think you know a team until the roster shifts under your feet. Northwestern’s defensive line just took a massive hit, and it happened before the first snap of the 2026 season. Per Yahoo Sports CFB, the Wildcats lost their most dangerous edge rusher, Anto Saka, who transferred to Texas A&M. That is a 2027 NFL Draft prospect walking out the door. It gets worse. Two other starters, Aidan Hubbard and Carmine Bastone, signed pro contracts this summer. They are gone for the Seahawks and the Edmonton Elks. Even the experienced Richie Hagarty and Najee Story graduated. The group that was supposed to be the anchor of the defense is now missing its top four names.

It’s a rebuild from the trenches up. The coaching staff changed too. Christian Smith, the defensive line coach, departed Evanston for an edge-rushing specialist position at Penn State. You lose your best player and your best teacher in the same offseason. The numbers show a team that needs to find new answers fast. The Wildcats are looking at a 2026 season where they must rely on players who have never started a game for them.

They’re rebuilding from the ground up.

One Star Left Standing

So who is left to stop the run and pressure the quarterback? Michael Kilbane is the only returner with real starting experience. He will slide into a starting role after a season where he posted career-highs in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. He has to carry the load. Following a consistent 2025 season, Brendan Flakes will return to his key defensive tackle role. After appearing in seven games during 2025, Tyler Gant seems ready for an expanded role as a tackle. Mason Mayne, a redshirt freshman, might fit seamlessly into the rotation. But beyond that core, the team is leaning on newcomers who have yet to prove themselves against Big Ten competition.

The new faces include Calvin Lorek, Nick Costa, Nick Zalewski, Tre Hoskins, Ronald Derrick III, and Gage LaDere. They are freshmen who need to learn fast. Dominic Kirks arrives as a redshirt sophomore from Ohio State. Jamaal Johnson comes in as a graduate student from UCF. Glory Stephen-Wangboje is a redshirt junior from Sacred Heart. These names matter because they are the only ones left. The depth chart is thin, and the margin for error is non-existent. If Kilbane gets hurt, the whole line crumbles.

A New Coach With a New Plan

Enter Ross Kolodziej. Before arriving at Northwestern, he spent three years as Stanford’s defensive line coach. He brings a specific pedigree. In 2021 while coaching at Wisconsin, Kolodziej led his Badgers to a national top ranking for allowed yards per carry at 2.1. They also led in rushing yards per game at 6. He knows how to stop the run. Kolodziej aims to instill an aggressive style of play in his defensive linemen. He wants them to stop the run or disrupt in the trenches. This is the exact style the team needs after losing its physical leaders.

The coaching staff believes the talent is there, even if the experience is gone. Kolodziej sees the potential in the room. He noted that “There’s a lot of length in the room. There’s some speed and athleticism in the room. These guys are all wired the right way, highly competitive and have a really good work ethic.” That is a strong vote of confidence from a coach who has seen the best. The players have the tools. Now they have to put them together under a new system.

Can They Fill the Void?

The question for fans is simple: can this group hold up? The loss of Saka, Hubbard, and Bastone is huge. They were the guys who made plays. Now, Kilbane and Flakes must lead a group of freshmen and transfers. The new coach has a plan, but plans don’t make tackles. The Wildcats have lost a lot of quality and experience. The 2026 season will be a test of depth and development. If Kolodziej can turn these new faces into a unit that stops the run, the defense might survive. If not, the line will be a liability.

The team faces a steep climb. The depth chart is full of names that fans are still learning to recognize. The coaching change adds pressure. The loss of key players adds doubt. But there is hope in the return of Kilbane and the arrival of Kolodziej. The Wildcats need to find their identity fast. The season starts soon, and the clock is ticking. The defense must be ready, or the whole team will feel the pain. The fans will be watching closely to see if the new pieces fit.
