The Barefoot Hit
Heliot Ramos got his first hit in pinstripes on Wednesday night, but he did it with only one shoe. The newly acquired outfielder flew around first base after a flare into short right field. His left shoe popped off, causing a brief trip that sent his helmet flying too.
Despite being barefoot with his head exposed, Ramos managed to slide safely into second base while hustling. It was a chaotic moment in his second game with the new team. Acquired from the Giants in a Deadline day trade, he immediately demonstrated his grit.
Play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco captured the madness perfectly on the broadcast. “Lost all kinds of equipment, but he’s there with his first Yankee hit,” he observed. That kind of hustle matters more than a perfect uniform to the fans in the stands.
The lineup lacking Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger anticipates thump from the right side brought by Ramos. He is proud to be wearing the pinstripes and ready to work. He said on Tuesday, “Who doesn’t like being a Yankee?”
Effort Over Equipment
This story is about a player who refuses to stop when things go wrong. Most guys would pull up or look for their gear. Ramos just kept running until he crossed the bag. That is the kind of effort that wins ballgames over a long season.
The Yankees need this kind of fire right now. The lineup has big holes without their star power. Ramos brings energy that can’t be bought on the free agent market. He shows up ready to fight for every inch of dirt on the field.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or a veteran. The game respects effort above all else. You can see this in how he plays the game every day. Fans love to see a player who gives everything he has.
His new team is already seeing a fast impact from Ramos. Indeed, the pace was so rapid that he ran right out of his shoe. That is a memory fans will tell their friends for years to come.
Old-Timers’ Day is Saturday. The fans will be there to cheer. It is a perfect time to see the new guys play in front of the home crowd.
