The Line Has Been Crossed
Former Philadelphia Eagles scout John Middlekauff says the latest move by LSU coach Lane Kiffin pushes college football into uncomfortable territory. He believes the league is breaking a rule most fans agree on. “Saying that you can go to a training camp and then return to college feels like we’re crossing a line here that most people are going to agree upon,” Middlekauff said in an Instagram clip, according to Yahoo Sports. He called the whole situation insane. The scout knows the game better than most because he spent years looking for talent for a pro team.
This isn’t just about one player. It is about a group of young men who signed pro deals, got cut, and now want to play for LSU again. Middlekauff says the legal system is the real reason this is happening. “The problem is every time these guys sue, they win,” he said. Courts have given these players a second chance they did not have before. Now coaches have to deal with the mess.
Kiffin Is Just Following Rules
Even though the scout thinks the line is crossed, he does not blame the coach. “I will defend Lane Kiffin here for doing this,” Middlekauff said. The coach is just using the tools he has. “These are the rules that he’s handed.” Kiffin knows the players he wants. He took Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris from Ole Miss. Both signed NFL contracts this year but got released. Now they want to come back to college.
Kiffin moved fast when a Louisiana court order opened the door. He told the Pat McAfee Show that other schools were doing the same thing. “There’s court orders in South Carolina, Georgia, California, Kentucky, all over the country issuing the same thing for these kids,” Kiffin said, according to Yahoo Sports. He argues that rival SEC teams were calling the agent of Wright to offer big money while acting mad at LSU. Kiffin says he just won the race for the players.
A National Champion Is Disgusted
Not everyone agrees with the coach’s logic. Breiden Fehoko won a national title at LSU in 2019 and still loves the school. But he hates what is happening now. “LSU as a whole university in athletics is moving so disgusting right now,” Fehoko wrote in an X post, according to Yahoo Sports. He said he cannot believe the product he is seeing. The former defensive lineman thinks the program has lost its soul.
Fehoko put it bluntly. “It’s become money over morals and I’m absolutely disgusted,” he wrote. He loves his university but hates the direction. The players involved have good stats. In 2025, Wright secured 39 receptions totaling 635 yards alongside five touchdowns. Nine tackles for loss and three sacks were recorded by Harris. But Fehoko thinks the method of getting them is wrong.
The League Pushes Back
The SEC is not happy with this new path. The conference adopted a new policy on Tuesday to stop it. The rule bars athletes who signed pro contracts or were drafted from returning to conference schools. This move directly threatens the plans for Wright and Harris. The conference said allowing pros back would blur the line between college and pro sports.
The Big Ten adopted its own ban earlier on the same day. This stops the flow of players who want to use the court rulings to get back in the game. Middlekauff believes the scenario of NFL training camps serving as a temporary stop has finally hit a wall. The conferences are trying to fix the hole the courts made. Now the question is if the court orders will still hold up against the new conference bans. The players are young, just 22 years old, and they are caught in the middle of a legal fight they did not start.
